Becker, Sylvia

Sylvia Becker, age 89, passed away peacefully from complications related to a stroke on Sept. 22, 2017.

Sylvia is survived by her husband, Rolfe Becker, daughter Erica Morin, son-in-law Thom Morin, son Bryan Becker, daughter-in-law Yolanda Becker, grandchildren Anna and Ian Becker, nephew Stephen Richter and hundreds of people she met in her lifetime.

Sylvia was born Jan. 15, 1928, in Vienna, Austria. Her time in Vienna endowed her with an ever-loving appreciation of culture and the arts. She traveled with her sisters as part of the Kindertransport after the Anschluss, residing in the West Midlands in England during World War II. At the Priory School there she excelled in schoolwork, lacrosse, and in later years, recounted stories of movies, boyfriends, Uncle Sandy, Aunt Kath, and living in England during the Blitz. After the war, she came to the U.S. reuniting with one of her sisters in New Jersey.

Sylvia enjoyed the East Coast but using her skills to take on what would now be chief of staff for a multi-state company, ended up in Minneapolis, Minnesota. There, she met Rolfe. They married in 1960 in Kansas City at The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah with the help of Elsa and Jack Zellemeyer.

Sylvia immersed herself in Kansas City, co-chairing the Clothesline Sale at The Pembroke Hill School, supporting Lyric Opera, William Jewell, the Missouri Repertory Theater and participating extensively in Jewish Federation and Menorah Hospital Women’s Auxiliary. She and Rolfe traveled with the Nelson Atkins Art Museum docents and used their tennis knowhow as members of the American Medical Tennis Association. A loyal Chiefs fan from Municipal Stadium to Arrowhead, Sylvia became a rabid Royals and Jayhawk fan, too.

Donations in honor of Sylvia can be made to Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City.

Funeral arrangements are private per the family’s wishes. A celebration of Sylvia’s life will be held in the future.
